About the role

We’re offering an exciting Degree Apprenticeship opportunity based at Sonoco’s R&D Department in Wantage, where you’ll be part of our Packaging Sciences Section. Reporting to the Packaging Sciences Manager, you’ll work across the Pack Testing and Analytical & Microbiology teams to help assess new packaging materials, investigate how products perform, and support vital research for future food-safe solutions.

 

Alongside your hands-on work, you’ll be supported to complete a part-time BSc (Hons) Chemical Science Degree through Manchester Metropolitan University, giving you a fantastic blend of real-world experience and a fully funded degree qualification.

Key Responsibilities

Pack Testing

  • Make and pack food products using industry standards and processes.
  • Open and prepare cans for visual and technical inspection.
  • Evaluate container and product performance using lab tools and visual techniques.
  • Record findings using IT systems, ensuring clear labelling and traceability.
  • Use tools such as microscopes and defect analysis equipment to investigate faults.
  • Write formal reports that clearly explain your findings.
  • Help plan test programmes in line with R&D and business needs.

 

Analytical Chemistry

  • Support food analysis, regulatory testing, and investigation of packaging materials.
  • Use techniques like:
    • Ion Chromatography (IC)
    • ICP-OES
    • FTIR
    • Microwave Digestion
    • HPLC
    • DSC
  • Generate and report reliable, accurate scientific data that helps drive innovation.

 

You’ll also have the opportunity to support other exciting R&D projects on site.

Entry Requirements

Essential:

  • 104 UCAS points (BCC at A-Level), including Chemistry or a similar scientific subject.
  • A desire to learn and explore new things with a curious mindset.
  • Tech-savvy, with good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office and other IT tools.
  • Reliable and well-organised with strong time management skills.
  • Committed to working safely and responsibly.
  • Able to balance studying with workplace responsibilities.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience in food packaging, food production, or a laboratory environment (even as part of your studies or work experience).
